Blood Drives

Des Moines County Catholics host mobile blood drives conducted by Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Drive Center every two months at either St. John’s hall or St. Mary/Patrick hall.  Blood collected is used in area hospitals or sent to areas of greatest need.  All parishioners are encouraged to donate.

Birthright of Burlington

Birthright is a pregnancy help service offering positive alternatives to abortion. Birthright offers free pregnancy testing, prenatal care referrals and education for parenting planning or adoption planning.  All services are free and confidential.  Volunteers are needed and training is provided.  Birthright is located at 1113 South Main Street, Burlington, Iowa 52601

Christmas Giving Tree

Families in need are selected.  Tags with suggested gift ideas are hung on tree.  Parishioners take a tag, purchase the gift, wrap and place it under the tree.

Divine Mercy Chaplet

For the sick and dying.  Families may request this ministry at anytime for the home bound, nursing homes, hospitalized and hospice patients.  Brochures available.

Health Ministries

This ministry uses holistic health to address the spiritual, social, emotional and physical needs of parishioners.  Members of health professions  work with public and community health services to help deliver health care to the faith community. Meetings are the first Monday of the month, 10:00 a.m., Saint’s Mary/Patrick Parish Center.

Prison Ministry

Donations of religious items including bibles, rosaries, greeting cards, holy cards, and pamphlets are accepted.  Items provide comfort, encouragement and support to the inmates.  Items may be left at the parish office.

Cookies for Comfort

Ladies make cookie dough to take to Hospice House and bake there to comfort patients and families.  This is done on the first Friday and fifth Tuesday of each month.

Legion of Mary

Active members visit hospitals, nursing homes and make bereavement calls, take communion to the sick and shut-ins, lead the rosary at wakes and nursing homes and sponsor First Friday Adoration.  Meetings are every Monday from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at SSMP library for prayer and discussion.  Auxiliary members recite the rosary and Tessera prayers giving strength to
the active members.
